Heritage Days: (re)discover the Uccle-Boitsfort Hippodrome

On Saturday 19 September, the Uccle-Boitsfort Hippodrome will open its doors as part of Brussels Heritage Days. A great opportunity to discover the history and architecture of this exceptional site, as well as the major restoration works that are giving it a new lease of life.

Located on the edge of the Sonian Forest, the Uccle-Boitsfort Hippodrome is a remarkable witness to Brussels’ history. Inaugurated at the end of the 19th century, it was for several decades a major venue for horse racing and Brussels’ social life.

Today, this heritage is gradually regaining its former splendour. Since 2012, as part of a 99-year lease, the SAU has been entrusted by the Brussels-Capital Region with preserving and contributing to the redevelopment of this 32.5-hectare site.

Restoring heritage to give it new life. The SAU is responsible for the project management of the heritage restoration of the site’s main buildings. The Grand and Small Grandstands, the Weighing Building, the Stewards’ Tower, the betting halls, the entrances, the former forester’s house and the tunnel beneath the former racecourse have all been restored. The restoration of the Grand Stable and the barn is the final phase of this extensive programme.

But the Hippodrome is now much more than a former racecourse. Together with DROHME, which manages and operates the site, and Bruxelles Environnement, the SAU is helping to transform the former racecourse into a place for new uses: recreation, nature, sport, culture and education.

As part of Heritage Days, guided tours will be organised in collaboration with ORIGIN Architecture & Engineering, offering visitors the opportunity to discover the history, architecture and transformation of the site.
