The Anderlecht Abattoir

Because of its specific location along the Canal and its socio-economic and spatial impact on the surrounding areas and beyond, the site of the Anderlecht Abattoir merits an ambitious project that maximises the site’s added value.

By means of the Canal Plan, the Urban Development Corporation (SAU-MSI) has actively supported the overall development of the site and its integration into the territory. To this end, SAU-MSI took over the bare ownership of the site from the Municipality of Anderlecht in 2022 and restructured the current long-term lease concluded with the SA Abattoir to best adapt it to the site-specific challenges.
In partnership with the SA Abattoir and with the regional and municipal administrations, the ambitions and pre-existing plans of the various partners and administrations were harmonised to create an integrated operational plan.
The broad lines are as follows:
•    the development of an urban structure built around a square of the central market that is as interconnected with the surrounding areas as possible;
•    a significant increase in green areas, with a particular focus on the challenge the heat islands pose;
•    the continued development of spaces for food production, food processing and food trade;
•    the integration of new public facilities;
•    the construction of social housing along one of the Canal’s green esplanades.
